MemberHi James
I like the idea of a timeline but felt unqualified to add to it! In a teaching context I imagine students would be armed with information they could use to actually populate it.

MemberThanks Ann
Some great ideas for extending and improving on the original activity – sharing is a very good idea and I could build Google Drive/DropBox sharing into follow up sessions.

MemberExcellent idea Elizabeth – this fits perfectly with the module I ma going to be teaching next year. I aim to steal it! (with credit of course!)
Referring to the Scale Up project and opportunities for collaborating – I think doing this in small teams, perhaps with different topics allocated to each – might be a good variation.

MemberHi
we used Yammer at De Montfort University and I liked it – longer posts than Twitter, possibility of separate discussion or interest groups and a lot of tech-averse staff liked it too because it was private. We don’t use it here at my current Uni as we have Microsoft Lync (which no one uses apart from the IT guys)

MemberHi Jim (and everyone else)
The module will be VLE based but I hope to make use of/integrate OERs and other web based tools.
I am thinking I’d like to teach the students about some useful sites like Diigo, Evernote, Dropbox as whenever I mention these in passing to students in tutorials who have various storage/bookmarking problems, they are like “oh wow!!!”…. I also use a Facebook group to engage students pre-induction and we discuss things like online profiles, privacy, professional identity….
The module looks at finding information; evaluating online resources; referencing; designing research and is assessed through a research questionnaire which the students create using Survey Monkey. The main aim is to keep them interested and engaged whilst I sneek in important stuff about academic standards….
I have mixed feelings about OERs but when I did the OLDSMOOC I had to research some as part of the course and straightaway found some really brilliant stuff on research skills which I used pretty much unchanged with my students (Creative Commons/ Share Alike licences)
To be honest all of this sounds far more organised than in reality it is. I am hoping through this MOOC and the last one to pick up some clues about really good design and then rewrite the module over the summer.
In reply to another query – I have joined the ocTEL community on Google+ and hope tot use my rather empty and dusty profile on there to blog about this course.
OK – enough for now. Catch up later

MemberHi Jim
Your response caught my eye and I have had a sneaky peek at your blog also. I am in the throws of redesigning a traditional-ish study skills module to be more about digital literacy and digital identitiy so I am interested in your research and the OER you are planning. I don’t feel I have huge amounts of time to devote to ocTEL – having just participated on the OLDSMOOC I am getting the hang of this mooc lark, and popping in and out will probably work best for me- but I am going to stick with this group/discussion as already it is yielding much food for thought. I also hope to contribute my own thinking and not just lurk in the corner

MemberHi this group sounds like one that fits my interests.
I am Jane Challinor, a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University in Health and Social Care and have previously been involved in designing and teaching distance leaning courses. Currently all my teaching is face to face but with a lot of emphasis on using the internet, developing digital information literacy, research skills and employing innovative assessment using web based tools etc.
I am trying to redesign a “study skills” module for the 21st century and also to think about digital skills for tutors. I use our VLE as well as more web based tools and am interested in how the two complement one another – as well as how to improve the VLE usage of our staff.
Hope that’s enough about me to be going on with.
Jane
