Hi folks! Hope everyone had a good weekend. Just to let everyone know, I’m now unsubscribing from this forum…see you at our new home!
April 12, 2013 at 11:30 am in reply to: 12 mongrels wanted: small group for those of no particular pedigree #1730SharminaMemberWanted to raise a couple of points (must warn you, they’re not related to any of the big questions).
Just saw the webinar and must say I was unimpressed. If I put this online for any of my classes, my students would occupy themselves with other things very quickly – the slides were also quite uninspiring!
I know one of us mentioned (sorry, but this forum is too organised in horrid fashion and it’s too tedious to go back through all comments to figure out who it was!) that they tuned in for the live lecture and ended up fooling around in the back of the classroom – had I been there, I would’ve probably joined you!
I am also in agreement with the suggestion that maybe we need to move this discussion to another platform (FB was recommended), where discussions would be open only to the lucky-14! If others are in agreement, maybe it would be a good idea to move before too many other discussions get underway.

What I’ve found interesting so far is the way the term ‘technology’ is being used. It seems to be that when anyone speaks of technology they’re thinking virtual learning platforms (including social networking sites) – is that what we’re limiting our definition to? What about things like powerpoint/keynote, using other forms of media in the classroom, like video-clips..and how about the use of gadgets, like computers, tablets, etc.?
I teach in the UK at M-level and use powerpoint (and I have to say, these are not simply bullet points that appear on a blank white slide – each slide has relevant photos/backgrounds, as well as animation) integrated with video-clips. My use of a virtual learning environment (VLE) is limited to uploading readings to a site managed by our administrator and downloading student work from the same site for the purposes of assessment. I’d love to learn more about how other forms of technology could make learning more effective and enjoyable for the students.
April 8, 2013 at 10:29 am in reply to: 12 mongrels wanted: small group for those of no particular pedigree #1075SharminaMemberI’m in Jennie! I’m not sure if creating a group on those who teach history and modernity will generate much response, so I’m all for diversity! 2 down, 10 more to go!
SharminaMemberok my stuff is all sorted thanks to help from Anna Davidge. Martin, thanks for your help, as well!
Jane – hope you were successful in editing your profile.
SharminaMemberI guess like on any site, the initial set-up is a bit tedious. You can watch Martin explain the log-in and profile editing process (including having to use Gravatar to upload a photo) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9_A3nlYA3M
SharminaMemberoh, to answer your other question Jane, if you want to edit your profile, the easiest way to do this is by clicking on your name in this forum – that’ll take you to your profile page and there are several options under where your pic should be – the last one says Edit.
SharminaMemberI’ve managed to unsubscribe from Jiscmail, but can’t subscribe using a different email address!
Jane, you’ll have to create a password first – by clicking on the link above provided by Martin. Once this has been confirmed by you (by way of clicking in a link that’ll appear in your inbox) – you can then sign in and unsubscribe. Hope this helps.
SharminaMemberThanks Martin. I managed to successfully unsubscribe my initial email from Jiscmail, but it won’t accept my new email for OCTEL.
Also, all official correspondence (newsletters, etc.) from OCTEL still appear in my initial email address – even tho I’ve changed in on the profile…
SharminaMembernot lost…but have a question: want to change my email (from the initial email submitted for registration); have indicated the preferred email in my profile, but all emails through jiscmail are still coming into the initial email I provided…can you help?
