Thank you, Roger, for putting this so succinctly. I read part of the debate this morning and I have been struggling with how to formulate my own response to what at the end of your email you refer to as 'elitism'. I kept thinking about what the measures we have put into place to support aspiring learners overcome a whole host of other barriers and I keep wondering why / how we can defend an attitude which punishes aspiring learners (deliberate repetition here!), even if we don't exactly tell them how we feel about [...]
