    Hi Roger,

I think its just a case of having a gmail account and going to the +Roger tab in the top left of the toolbar….

actually I just looked and there is a Roger Harrison  on Goggle+ with a photo of a little child –  b&w photo… that you??

And now the bar has moved and its Google hangouts.. I had my first one on Thursday last … its basically like Skype but youy can use your PC to show people stuff on trhe desktop in real time so its pretty handy

.. it just keeps on coming…..

    Have a good week all

    Hi Kate,

Just back after a few days away & trying to catch up.. I’m up to my oxters in course development at the minute & my team suggested i should use OERs  as “there is a lot of good material out there”.. well I can now say that yes there is but it seems to me to not suit me entirely as i know what i want and nobody (so far) has packaged what I want the way i want.. its actually a most frustrating experience I’ve spend literally hours trawling thru MIT OpenCourseware/ Merlot etc & the rewards are very slim pickings….

I was not expecting this I must admit…..

But I do like the sound of open access to peer reviewed journals asa that would definitely make research easier 😉

    Back to the grindstone..

    Hi Roger,

spent a good 10 mins yesterday drooling over the latest iPad… its funny cos I really want one tho I’m not terribly sure what for..

such is the power of TEL propaganda .. or just naked consumerism??

Anyway I absolutely agree with you that ” the material needs to meet the students at the level that they are at, be timely to what they are meant to be doing, be related to their own experience (where possible and especially if postgrad) and to their likely occupation following the course” but I think I’ve seen a problem in that the students are so incredibly diverse. In a recent online module I was facilitating 90% of the class just ‘got on with the weekly tasks’ but there was one who had to ask so many questions before he could do anything.. so my current dilema is how ( in my new online course developer role) do I approach  giving the students  ( who are on a Masters program) the content they need at the level that is apropriate.

Some most probably(definitely;-) know more than me and some are arriving from ground zero

Can TEL really help this issue….I suspect not but I think its great that by using TEL I may be able to reach just one or two more students.. How I’m attempting to do this is possibly for another post !!!

    Hi Jennie,

well on a personal note I’m not here JUST because its free.. I think the fact there are so many like minded individuals who are willing to share of their knowledge that this has to be the key selling point (a bit of a tautology given the freeness of a MOOC?)

I don’t think I could speak to the elearning aspect yet as this is my first MOOC and I’m not sure whats going to happen from minute to minute.. but I do love that I can disappear into my class.. give my f2f lecture ( where God knows I try to bring in as much elearning .. we watched a Screencast on Pulse Code modulation!! ..as I can) then I can come back to my desk read some interesting posts and hope for some kind of e-spiration..

So if MOOCs are bad e-learning will have to wait til I’m a few weeks into this I reckon

Don’t think I’ve answered the question so am now off to the e-corner where I will stand for an indeterminate time 😉

    Hi Lucy,

for quizzes, screencasts and all things multimedia check out Articulate….

It seems to me that we have an interesting group who all seem to want to be more student-centric….

Hope we can keep fanning the embers as we move forwards!!

    Cheers,

    Hi,

I’d like to join this group too please.

My experience to date is being both a student ( for two years) on an online Masters in Software Engineering and enjoying the online part so much I’m now a facilitator on the course I did…..

Added to this I’ve just started work on developing an online module in Object Oriented Design

I’ve just finished my first Screencast & have started using Articulate for workshops.

What I’d love to know is what really engages students… I’d like to Wow them and encourage them to learn without just shoving content at them

    Any thoughts?

    Can I join too?

I have taught online with the OU last year ( tho to be honest there were face-to-face sessions where I really did the teaching  = blended??) we tried Illuminate but it was damn difficult….

Am now working in an online IT program where I never see the students but everything is delivered electronically

Am just starting to develop a module in Software Design using UML so am hoping to learn lots from all of you….

    Cheers

    So FE isn’t ‘further education’?

Sorry to be a bit dense but as someone said this is an international  MOOC

I might as well embarrass  myself totally & just check that HE is Higher Education.. 3rd level/Uni/College etc.

So confusing.. and this is only day 2 of my first MOOC!!!!

    cheers

    Trish
