  • Hi Nick

We currently also have an option TEL unit, as well as trying to embed TEL in the core units, so far focussing on the teaching and learning, and assessment units.  I’d say that it is a work in progress, and there is scope for a more radical re-design.

    Hi Jilly and Elizabeth

As an ex Librarian who has been working in TEL for the past 10 years I am also very interested in the area of digital literacies.  I have found the JISC Literacies development framework useful as a starting off point for conversations. If you haven’t come across it , it identifies access, skills, practices (ways of thinking and acting) and attributes as key elements when thinking about DLs. I would also add awareness to these four.   My role particularly involves supporting staff, and whilst it would appear straightforward to provide support for raising awareness, getting access and developing skills, it is more challenging to address practices and attributes.

So one of my “Big questions” would be “What are effective ways of developing staff practices and attributes with regard to digital literacies?”

    Hi Anne

I agree with you about BB Mobile. I particularly like the way you can use Discussion Fora, which people find clunky in the Desktop version.

However I haven’t yet come across the Grade Centre in Mobile Learn, so I’m not sure how you could download assignments via the App, unless they are uploaded in other places such as blogs or discussion fora. I’d be interested to hear more about your experience.

    Hi Christian

    I agree with your concerns.

Just to clarify – our pilot is focussing on the workflows, including how they can be adapted to other devices (not just ipads).  We are not planning to buy hardware on any large scale, but to show staff options for personalising their marking using a range of approaches and devices. Many already have their own devices and we are looking at how they can be used alongside institutional systems.

My feeling is that with regard to providing feedback online it is difficult to have a one size fits all approach. Different staff in different disciplines will have their own preferences.

    Hi Jamila

I’m not sure about “delivery” of courses, but here at the University of Bristol we are looking at the use of ipads by staff for online marking. We will be evaluating a small pilot to see how markers find the workflows (taking assignments from Blackboard onto ipads via Google Drive and back again)  and the actual annotation of assignments, as well as getting student views on the usefulness of their feedback.

    best wishes

    Hi there

I am involved with an equivalent programme here at the University of Bristol and the use of TEL, including MOOCs, within such staff development activities is also of interest to me.  Although we are not actively looking at integrating MOOCs at present, with the arrival of Futurelearn I am sure it will be on the agenda soon, so I will be interested in exploring your questions, Nick, as ocTEL progresses.

    best wishes

    Roger
