Hi Shuna, I quite agree with a lot of what you’ve said and this experience does seem to be a bit troublesome. I too feel slightly disoriented, but I’ve decided to just go with it and hopefully given time, I will feel a little more comfortable.

J.P. Gee (2007) writes about semiotic domains – environments which use multi-modal forms of information (word, image, sound, video etc) and which we as participants, therefore, have to learn to interpret effectively in order to make sense of things. So for me, this MOOC experience is more about learning how to think and behave within a different, non familiar context, than it is about the content, or tutor.

Hi SolentRoger, I don’t think you have to include an element of collaboration in order for a tech facilitated learning activity to be considered TEL. So long as there is some form of technology used in the learning experience, I feel that this warrants using the term TEL. Where it gets more interesting, for me, is around the design of the learning activity. Once you can understand the objective(s) of the TEL learning activity, I think you can then start to categorise what form of TEL it is. I like Napier’s model of the 3E framework (Enhance, Extend, Empower) as a means by which to articulate the type of TEL experience a user is having.

Hi all, I consider myself to be a bit of a mongrel, so I’d like to join your group. I manage a TEL team at a small university in Yorkshire. Our roles are quite diverse and we get involved in all kinds of TEL related activities.

I’ve recently completed my MSc in e-Learning at Edinburgh but this is my first MOOC. As well as the general content, I’m interested in the whole process of how MOOCS are managed and organised.

Look forward to being a part of the team.
