I wonder if there will be enough people teaching languages to form up a useful and interesting group to pursue some of the issues or practices especially relevant to us?
I teach EFL at university in Japan, and sometimes like to get out of the English teaching “bubble” to exchange ideas with teachers in k-12 general education or other subjects in higher ed. But, I find I get a lot out of conversing with my ELT peers and teachers of Spanish, Indonesian, or any other language as well.
Anybody? How and where to set up? G+ circle perhaps?
April 4, 2013 at 9:59 am #517garymotteramMemberI work in the field of TESOL, I’m a teacher trainer at the University of Manchester in the UK. I have advertised this course to my students, so there is a chance that some of them will want to join in.
April 4, 2013 at 11:12 am #528teflteacherukMemberI teach on using technology and media in TESOL at Westminster University, UK, and teach EAP at another institution. I was hoping there would be some other EFL tutors on this course. I’m glad I’ve found you.
I think a google+ circle is a nice idea.
April 4, 2013 at 12:39 pm #548LauraMcLoughlinMemberHi, I teach Italian (both in class and online) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Glad to join this group. Google+ is good and easy to use.
Looking forward to this course.
April 4, 2013 at 1:22 pm #556rangRoseMemberHello,
I teach Irish (Translation Studies) at National University of Ireland, Galway and have garnered experience in both traditional and online teaching down through the years.
I have a keen interest in language learning methodologies and technologies, and I am currently pursuing my PhD in animated storytelling.
Laura and I are colleagues (!) here in NUIG and are currently working on a language learning platform called ClipFlair (www.clipflair.net).
I am delighted to be part of this group and look forward to the road ahead!
April 4, 2013 at 3:17 pm #606Wulin MaMemberI do like CALL research and have been in this research area for several years. However, what I found is technology do can help teach in an effective way,but how effective it is I really don’t know but it seems not so good as it is expected in a general way. I hope we can solve this problem in the future.
April 4, 2013 at 3:30 pm #624David ReadMemberSeems to be plenty of ESL/EAP teachers around, I teach EAP at the University of Sheffield. As for Google+, I did set up a G+ Community for the OCTEL course generally and we could have a subsection within that for EFL/EAP teachers. The Community is here and the subsection (which I just added now!) is here . I thought it might be better to have it part of a larger community as I’m sure things we discuss might be relevant to the wider community. Anyhow, let me know what you think!
April 4, 2013 at 5:45 pm #654CarmeRodriguezMemberI teach Catalan and Spanish at the University of Liverpool. I am glad to join this group. Hello Gary, we met a few years ago :-).
April 5, 2013 at 2:28 am #761Ted O’NeillMemberHi Carme,
I just had my first visit to Barcelona last month and loved it. Continued on to Valencia and Seville for the INTED2013 and TESOL-Spain Conferences. It was an amazing visit and now really feel like I should try to study some Spanish. Never too late, is it?

April 8, 2013 at 7:13 am #1059CvetankaWalterMemberHi Everyone,
I am Cvetanka. I teach (Business) English as a foreign language to adults in Germany. I am making the first with technology in my courses. I offer Moodle activities in addition to my f2f classes this semester and I would like to learn more in the field.
April 9, 2013 at 10:36 am #1328McrKaylaMemberHi
I’m one of Gary’s students on the MA Educational Technology and TESOL at the University of Manchester. By day I’m also a Learning Technologist at the same HEI. (Hello Gary – thanks for the links!)
This is my first MOOC and I’m pleased to see a group for those interested in language learning and teaching. I look forward to seeing more here and in the Google+ circle.

April 10, 2013 at 10:36 am #1487CvetankaWalterMemberHi,
I am currently in Lancaster taking part at the residential of the PhD programme in e-research & technology enchanced learning.
I am new in the field but I am very interested in creating useful activities on Moodle.
So I am happy to be on this course with you. It is the first of this kind for me.

April 10, 2013 at 8:27 pm #1579AlmudenaSanchezMemberHi
I teach Spanish at London Metropolitan University and I have been developing learning materials for blended learning (Blackboard) for a few years.
Last year I had the opportunity of “experimenting” with TEL in a SEDA accredited module delivered online and I thought the whole event fascinating. I would like to learn more about what it is like to be an online learner so that I can develop distance learning courses for learning Spanish.
April 15, 2013 at 12:40 pm #1932Ted O’NeillMemberHi Kayla,
Gary mentioned a few students were at IATEFL in Liverpool. Wish I could have gone. Were you part of that group?

April 15, 2013 at 2:56 pm #1950McrKaylaMemberHi Ted
Unfortunately work kept me in Manchester (I’m not a full-time student), but I was there virtually, courtesy of Twitter and some interesting online presentations. Have you seen any of the presentations? I looked out for David Crystal’s as I know from past experience that he is an engaging speaker, and for Jim Scrivener’s “Demand High” sessions, as I am a keen reader of the Demand High ELT blog (http://demandhighelt.wordpress.com/).
I particularly enjoyed the session on One-to-one learning: handheld devices in technology-supported English learning by Michael Carrier… and this seems particularly relevant to some areas I’m “reading myself into” for my studies.
Best wishes
Kayla
