Hi Jennifer, that’s an interesting reflection. I would be interested to find out what you think about the role of technology in there different types of activities you describe.
Hi Maren,
In regards to technology, when I switched from face to face lectures to students choosing either a web based package (created with SoftChalk) or an audiovisual (created with Articulate or Captivate), some students embraced the new approach but others still indicated they just wanted me to get up and give them the information (how they had done for the first few years of their uni study)! or that they “already spent enough time in front of the computer”, some requested material in a paper format. So, it was a mixed response. I also gave them portfolio activities. These were structured around the CPD cycle (identify what they didn’t know), identify how they were going to learn, do the learning and then provide evidence of learning. They were free to document/address this in whatever way they wanted to (e.g. evidence of learning could be video, brochure…or whatever media they wanted to use. Because of the freedom of choice and less direction, many were war that they would not score well, even when a rubric was given to guide them.. I had to spend a lot of time supporting students as they got used to this new approach… which i see as part of my role.
