Incidentally, Dash is a decent freemium Android app available via that directory link. Can’t comment on iOS.

I would say at first glance that Yammer is far more capable as you would expect of a unified platform from a single supplier. I don’t think App.net (ADN) will ever compete though I suspect you could extend the Alpha viewer to some of the functionality. One particular feature missing from ADN is groups although you can invite individuals to a…[Read more]

Noteworthy development: Linden Lab have announced they are developing a next generation of their virtual world product Second Life due to go beta in 2015 and in production from 2016. It will be closed source in the first instance and is therefore distinct from High Fidelity which is being developed under an open source licence by a much smaller…[Read more]

Thanks to all group members for your input to ocTEL and to everyone on the ALT/organisational/delivery side too.

See http://longposts.com/29648056 for my thoughts on app.net as an alternative to Twitter. It seems to be running just as well now as it did before the business aspect closed and, follow limits apart for the free tier (40), it does most of the important stuff. I wouldn’t want to push it as an institutional adoption at the moment but for certain…[Read more]

Thanks for your comment, Julie. Good point about support costs and I agree that there are pros and cons to both approaches.

Guy, thanks for your comment. I don’t think it’s a question of being “behind”, just appreciating that we have a more diverse palette of tools should we choose to use them. I should stress incidentally that I don’t use Second Life, I use OpenSim. For the most part it’s just as good, far more flexible and much cheaper (or free) as it’s open…[Read more]

Getting to Primland (a building tutorial for OpenSim)
Bear in mind that OpenSim differs from SL in allowing the region owner to archive the region as an OAR file provided object permissions are set appropriately. Moreover, you can run a region and viewer from a USB stick (and upload OARs though you need the command line for that). See…[Read more]

Thanks for the feedback. Bear in mind that we are talking about learner support here rather than lesson design.
Possibly “exemplar track” was a bad choice of term, “demonstration” maybe? There would indeed be a plenary session at the end with student presentations of some kind and, of course, the work created previously remains available to all…[Read more]

Demo of an immersive radar chart widget. Multiple colours could be accommodated simply by having three copies of the widget. Could also add pertinent Tech Trumps cards along relevant dimensions. Probably tech overkill here but shows how easy it is to create simple stuff that could be reused in multiple contexts…[Read more]

I agree though I only used the web version — I liked presentation mode 2 which reminded me of Tufts VUE. The absence of a collaboration option, Android app, text export or any obvious business plan are concerns. Not enamoured over use of Flash but Cmap and VUE use Java for authoring which is probably worse these days.
