Thanks all for the comments. I am now back to ocTEL after two weeks of exams – invigilating not sitting them, but it still  took up all my hours and energy. It’s catch up time!

Rose, I think that you raise an important issue about staff agreeing to do work, but then being too busy and not delivering.  I suppose this should become part of the c…[Read more]

I’ve written here about a project to stream lectures to an overflow room…

    Project Stream

Like both Julie and Lisa, I found that staffing issues were a key aspect of the project.

It sounds like a good option in that situation, apart from the learning curve of the publisher’s software environment.

Hi Rose, Sorry I don’t have any positive experiences to share about using publishers’ online resources. I don’t recall if I looked at anything from McGraw Hill in particular, but in general I’ve found them too inflexible for our purposes. The academics I deal with want everything bespoke!

I recommend looking at GRE subject tests (http://www.ets.org/gre/subject/about) for examples of MCQs at higher levels in Bloom’s taxonomy.

Researchers at MIT and Harvard examined the behaviour of students who participated in the first wave of EDx MOOCs and came up with the following classification:  Viewers, Listeners, Optimizers and Completionists.

I think we have to decide what is best in each situation. An alternative with large classes is to use multiple markers, which may give more personal feedback, but can be inconsistent, so moderation is needed, which can lead to extra work and delays.

It’s not so much a case of staff time being “saved” by using e-assessment, but that the time is…[Read more]

    http://eforenhancing.wordpress.com/2014/06/02/excel-autograding-alternative-e-assessment/

This post describes an alternative method of e-assessment that we use for quite a specific purpose – assessing practical write-ups where students all follow the same experimental protocol but each record and analyse their own results.

I hope it works out well for you, Elizabeth.

Trying out new software can be frustrating, so it is useful to have feedback here from different people who have tried out different things.

Following on from learning styles, I read about UDL – Universal Design for Learning.

This suggests that courses should include multiple options (in presentation and assessment) from which the student can chose.
