@ilearninguk, excellent points! I agree with you *with emphasis*
-long post warning!-
In fact, the technology and protocols for continuous assessment of learners already exists. e-portfolios are an excellent way of organizing continuous assessment . The practice of using them is also well researched and the technologies are improving all the…[Read more]

Hi Russell,
I am enjoying our conversation as well.
I do want to stress that I do not see TEL or Technology Enhanced Learning and MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses as one and the same thing. For me, […]

Hi Russell,
Hmmm.. your disappointing experience, coming back to formal education after having worked in the profession is actually very normal. Formal professional education, generally, is to prepare those who […] -

Yes, I did find your post interesting. The issues you raised and the reservations you articulate are ones that I hear often in my job and ones that I reflect on often myself. The ‘stream-of-consciousness’ writing style you used was an authentic representation of your thought process; you were being real, I w…[Read more] -

Thank you for a very interesting post. You make some very pertinent and philosophical points about learners’ online experiences, both in ocTEL and generally. I am not sure that I can provide any form of resolution for the issues you raise, however, I am eager to engage with them. With respect to asynchronicity in forum…[Read more]

@Julie,
I think a strategy refers to an overall plan of action. Oxford dictionary defines strategy as, “A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a long term or overall aim”.
I think the concept strategy can operate on a variety of levels in education. Teachers may have instructional strategies or plans of…[Read more]

“To play devils advocate, how would this be achieved in a vocation that is subjective rather than objective, eg. Art?”
@gary: A good question! I don’t really feel qualified to talk about the artistic process but for artists, I am sure that there must be some types of general skills and tasks that help to define their practice. Identifying th…[Read more]

@Andy Wilson: Thank you for replying, I appreciate the conversation! I would say though, that authentic assessments do not have to be the same tasks or at the same skill levels as real work practitioners. Authentic assessment , as I meant it, referred to the processes and products of a particular practice or discipline.
As a quick ex…[Read more]

Hi Malmaley,
I agree with you that learning is both individual and social. And I do agree that variety in the learning environment is important for engagement; monotonous note-taking would dull anyone’s mind.
However, assessment doesn’t have to be only ‘individual and directed”. I agree that there needs to be the certification of individual…[Read more]

Hi Jennifer,
I too have observed that when some students are confronted with the “wide open spaces” of self-directed learning, they can become overwhelmed and have difficulty in figuring out how to proceed.
This may be because, as you suggest, that students are used to learning as being comprised of very structured activities in which their role…[Read more] -

In reply to: ilearninguk posted an update in the group Activity 0.2 small group reflection Hi all. What is our topic of reflection going to be or is it organic? Joel ViewHi, I am Kathy, one of the support tutors with ocTEL. I find this topic of fear very interesting. As someone who has worked with technology over a number of years, I have seen the technology changing rapidly. What is “hot” and all the rage one day, sinks into oblivion the next. This has let me to orient my attention towards student learning…[Read more]

Bear with me as I play devil’s advocate here; I am hoping this exercise will lead to some fruitful thoughts. Yes, this course has a start and and end date and instructional content that is consistent.for all participants, objectively, then, it has the structure and requirements of a “course”. I guess my next question would…[Read more] -
