Hi all,
I’m Flea and work with Ed at Plymouth. I’m a Learning Technologist based in Arts & Humanities so am really interested to find out how others are engaging with TEL in this area, both through a VLE and social media.
Gary – does your institution encourage the use of social media or does it just happen? Do they use anything other than Facebook?
During my time there they ethos from Senior Management was very anti -Social media (in fact, I remember attending a compulsory e-Safety CPD session which was the worst case of scare mongering I have witnessed. “If a child has facebook, they will meet a paedophile and bad things happen” was the message being deliver
During my final six months there they did make the jump to run an institutional twitter to aid marketing etc. However, they also introduced a college policy that staff could not use their own twitter feed/blog to promote their courses or celebrate their learners work. College reputation and all that.
Ideally , they wanted everyone to interact via the Moodle, however it was poorly designed with a very corporate feel and learners struggled to engage with it.
