Hi Martin, Thanks for this it is great. I’ve also created a tagboard @ https://tagboard.com/octel/171878 which is a nice way of visualising tweets. Nothing half as complex as yours š but simple enough to set up […]

thanks James and Rose, this is very insightful and will research more on this. i’m thinking how this theory fits in with the thinking around MOOCs, especially the FutureLearn ones we are involved with, where they are quite demanding of high quality assets, stepped after one another, and limited on much other functionality, but very mobile…[Read more]

hi james can you tell us more about this theory and how it might map onto Gary’s ideas of making learning tasks appear in the centre of the matrix, or also the performance role play type learning, which Gary attached this notion.
The way you describe it it sounds like a balancing act, so the idea of learning in the centre is impossible, no?

@gary @aditya there are some tools out there (eg WebPA) in which students can give each other scores based on set assessment criteria, and it will work it all out into a score which can be applied for group effort. A great thing about this tool is that some groups work together and agree to give the same, and others will not – this is a good…[Read more]

Great Post! Love this bit:
Do you want to teach someone how to hold a paintbrush and mix paint, or do you want to teach them how to express themselves (using paint)?
And I like the comparison between computational methods of assessment and more real world examples fitting for person and real-world benchmarks as you describe such as commercial…[Read more]

Hi Louise, I think that approach is individual, rather than autonomous, as it is directed by the paper, although there are aspects of autonomy to the research process. I think autonomous study is a bit like this course as in you make up your own learning outcomes and then autonomously strive towards them (socially in this case).
I think the…[Read more]

You can do any (or all!) of 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3. The badge is for replying to 3 posts in terms comparative reflection, but the evidence is to provide 3x Web links for your contributions. In my mind an OP (original post) is as good a contribution for ocTEL and can count as 1 of the 3 pieces of evidence.

I love it that the start to every academic subject must start with questions of definition š
I’ve got a feeling that the strategies being referred to here are institutional or sector wide, in terms of having a plan which will make a difference either within your own institution, or (and I guess the 2 are related) within the wider sector and…[Read more]

Hi grant, thanks for the post. It sounds like you incorporate many of the dimensions and quadrants in this task. I particularly like the small group digital media activity. Perhaps bringing the outside world in using Twitter may serve you well as an extension to the task… Out of interest, can you give more detail on the task – it’s level etc.

Santanu, I think I can answer that question. I think it is to do with a portfolio approach to assessment. This also can work well I think in a work placement setting.
The learning outcomes for tasks need to be negotiated in advance with the learners, within certain boundaries. We have a tutor at Lancaster who teaches project management in a…[Read more]

very briefly Gary and Andy, on the subject of Art, I used to have long conversations with an artist about this, and the conclusion we always came back to was ‘artistic intent’ or ‘intent’ as the factor that differentiates art as ;beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that (which presumably you were referring to).
It may be worth thinking…[Read more]

I think it is worth considering here that the task is related to the person as well as the learning objective. That is to say that different people will learn the same thing differently and prefer different styles of teaching. The point of this task for me is to critically examine what we are actually doing now, and work out if it is
a) the only…[Read more]

I think it might helpĀ to think of this in terms of a frame work like Blooms taxonomy or Maslows hierarchy of needs.
Social and autonomous learning almost always requires confidenceĀ in the subject matter, and in oneself (most importantly). It is about presenting your ideasĀ within a group situation and finding your own way through the advice re…[Read more]
