    Hi Teresa, thanks.

When I tried to post on your blog my comment did not seem to be accepted, however I kept the words … which were as follows.

“Although this is not my area of specialty I think it is generally considered that the best time to learn languages is early in life. I did and they still remain easily refreshable once I am…[Read more]

Thanks Linda … just picking up on your point of sustainability .. What is a reasonable life span for any technology ?

Any new software used to have a life of 3-5 years … and beyond that  if it were well founded someone more powerful would have copied it into a new dominant form or you expected to make a major change or a significant upd…[Read more]

@lcreanor – should I have posted my contribution above as a separate forum topic?  rather than a reply to your header post?

I have already posted a reflective item on another forum which would have applied here as well.

In terms of reflecting on the learning perspectives and assessment as suggested

Item one – would be included in the constructivist / social constructivist perspective as when the students were doing individual problems (practice) they were actively…[Read more]

I have had experience of 3 diverse applications of e_assess in my working education career. These were tailored to a specific context, designed to address identified needs and safely implemented with all care and responsibility. I can hear you asking where? .. in heaven .. no, just some 10 years ago when the the pressures of student numbers and…[Read more]

I thought that was … its not what you do it with but what you do with it  but perhaps that’s the same.  🙂

@glenn – indeed reading your comments which seem an overview by a teacher thinking about the learners’ perspective, has made me reflect on another perspective that impacts on the re-uability of learning objects … the intent of the author.  If one sets about making a generic re-usable object, the product is of a different nature to if you de…[Read more]

That was an informative experience, doing one of each of those suggested.

I watched the Khan presentation & did their algebra tute, did the expedition game and then tried the ethics VP

As the learner, I found that the video-based resources all had an embedded cultural context that brought some dissonance to me and this impeded the potential b…[Read more]

In my experience as a teacher facilitating a blend of online and f2f learning in groups of dispersed learners on long term placements – I have noted differences in uptake and willingness to engage in purpose built online resources amongst students.

Early in their placement when there are many other f2f distractions and skills to acquire, about 1…[Read more]

Yeah – and to me Tara’s concluding point that: “Teaching online is both completely different and absolutely the same as teaching in a classroom”  says it all.

The online dilemma for most teachers who are starting to adopt technology is familiarity with it and confidence in it. They are confident in their f2f skills and so can manage new st…[Read more]

test – I did that test as I know I made a response about the role of technology to Maren’s post higher up and it seems to not be there … it made an analogy of technology as an invisible way of directing learning as an electric fence does stock moving from paddock to paddock.

I put a tag of electric fence – can you search for that in this area?

I suppose if this exercise is to consider the polarities between individual / social and autonomous / directed  as characteristics of learning activities, including assessments as one of those … might be picking a poor example in many tertiary situations, certainly in medical education that would be the case.

In Kathy’s setting it sounds as th…[Read more]

Are required points of assessment (barrier or summative) therefore “individual and directed” as the judgment needs to be made about a single student’s competence to perform a required skill for certification.

Does this  indicate that an effective big picture learning environment is one that has periods of autonomous social learning and directed…[Read more]
