James Kerr wrote a new post, Welcome to Week 3 of ocTEL!, on the site ocTEL 2014

Welcome to Week 3 of ocTEL! This week, we are exploring materials and platforms, which includes resources and tools. In the readings, resources, and activities, one of the common themes you may notice is searching for the understanding behind the tools and resources we use-why do we select the ones we do? How do the resources address learners and the learning examined last week during week 2?

There have already been great discussions in the forum, on blogs, and all the other ocTEL communities about tools and platforms. The variety of interaction spaces that are active in the greater ocTEL community is evidence that TEL happens in many venues. ocTEL is about exploring; if you haven’t yet, try out a new venue, a new tool, or a new community. Blog or tweet about your exploration, what you’ve learned, or questions you have. Consider why you prefer one tool or community over others, and how each platform’s strengths could be applied to your teaching practice.

We will also explore open educational resources and their impact on TEL. The webinar this week is on Wednesday, May 21st, at 4:00 p.m. BST, and features Cable Green, Director of Global Learning with Creative Commons.

I understand there are at least 1,000 enrolled ocTEL participants now, and the badge submissions keep coming. Although Week 3 “officially” only lasts for a week, the following week is a “break week”, or a “catch-up week”. I prefer to think that Week 3 explorations will be so engaging we need two weeks to cover it!

Cheers,

Jim Kerr
