what I like about badges (closed) in this course so far….the simple addition of a value against each badge.
I participate in badges in every opportunity I get, not because I need extra motivation but because there is so many ways to use them. Actually participating in the process helps me to understand how they could work in other situations.
I look forward to discussions here and adding to my Mozilla backpack if they get that sorted by the end of ocTEL.
I’m doing the same Wendy,
I really want to spend this year exploring their use, or otherwise, in the police service. It’s all positive so far, despite the extra workload!
What do you mean by extra workload Mark?
I think badges are a nice way to motivate participants because taking part in a course without a carrot (French expression, hope it translates well) would not keep me participating long. But then, what to do with all those badges at the end of the course? How to claim their real value as PD?
I’m not suggesting it’s work that is not worth doing, but at the very least I need to design a series of badges with consistencies across the organisation, map them to national learning descriptors, create all the meta data to attach to them, install the platform to manage them, educate the organisation about them, work with the College of Policing to get them recognised outside my own organisation etc.
Hi mark, what might help is the Open Badges MOOC (Anne Derryberry) that is still open and available https://www.coursesites.com/webapps/Bb-sites-course-creation-BBLEARN/courseHomepage.htmlx?course_id=_264998_1. I completed this course and since then there is extra assistance in there for designing badges and more information from the Mozilla foundation. I think the biggest challenge is to get “open” badges that are recognised in the industry you work in, then they have value outside of a course. You are welcome to check out my blogs from the MOOC http://bit.ly/1n8GtZ8. The process of creating the Corporate Vision table and completing a SWAT was very helpful.
Hi July, That certainly is the challenge….”real value”. At the moment I have a mozilla backpack and I’ve shared it a couple of times. Only the badges with a useful design (ie metadata that means something and link to original assessment work) is worth putting in there. But have yet to get my work to recognise this on any level!
Thanks for sharing the open badges MOOC. I think that may be the next CPD activity for me!
