    Questionnaires:

Penn State University: Online Readiness Assessment

Illinois Online Network: Self Evaluation for Potential Online Students

University of Houston: Test of Online Learning Success

List of the characteristics they have in common:

They determine if the potential student:

    • has the necessary technology
    • has the necessary technological skills
    • is an independent learner
    • has clear motives

    Considerations:

The questionnaires identify the primary attributes possessed by successful online learners. Providing a similar questionnaire to our students would allow them to recognize their weaknesses. From there, students could be asked to identify ways in which they could improve upon their own weaknesses.

Yes, I agree that the questionnaires highlight areas for development but surely the onus is on the institution to provide guidance or signpost learners to sites or resources to address their needs? For on-campus learners, initial induction would identify any skills gaps which would then be managed by support services i.e. library, personal tutor, accessibilty etc. If the questionnaire replicates this initial face-to-face meeting, the outcome must be equitable.
