Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): who raised their hand Sandie Gay in Birmingham: sorry - was raising hands in answer to question! Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): no problem Sandie Gay in Birmingham: should pay attention! focussed now :) Andy Turner to Martin Hawksey (mhawksey), Caroline Greves, Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni: Voting not working? Elizabeth Charles(Lond): Martin - it doesn't seem to be picking up my results Jim Pettiward: can't seem to vote either... Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): canyou click the ABCD buttons under the participants panel, Jim? Andy Turner: Not sure my vote was counted then, it didn't display... Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Andy ditto Jim Pettiward: Hi Phil, yes voted for the first one OK but then didn't reset.. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: How can you know? Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): ok, i think it was just for scene setting... Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): you know in the second column in the participant panel Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): right of hand raised. Andy Turner: Yes Phil that is where it normally displays, but this column didn't register anything for me on vote 2 Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): sorry! Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Jim ditto for me I think Andrew Nicols: And for me Phil Andy Turner: It's not a problem. My answer was C for that anyway. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: Instructure? Is that a word? Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): do you think moodle could be added? Andrew Nicols: There are some Moodle-based moocs around James Kerr: Canvas Instructure is a LMS Sandie Gay in Birmingham: Sorry - was just being sceptical about a made up word :p Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): @james what is the difference bw LMS and VLE? Jim Pettiward: not getting the sound on the video, just pictures..... HeatherDale1: not getting osund or prictures Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): @martin, is there a youtube link to go in the chat for this Sharon Flynn (NUI Galway): I'm not getting the video at all Elizabeth Charles(Lond): It would be good if the video window could be resized. Moderator (Martin Hawksey (mhawksey)): The video is a clip from 'What is a mooc' Colin Gray: It's still going Martin Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Martin okay thanks. Colin Gray: Stopped now :) Jim Pettiward: here's the link on YT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW3gMGqcZQc Uzma: Couldn't view the clip Sandie Gay in Birmingham: blank window still in front Uzma: Thanks Jim Sandie Gay in Birmingham: OK now Sharon Flynn (NUI Galway): Thanks for the link Jim Jim Pettiward: I think the clip Martin showed was from around 2 mins in... Jim Pettiward: no problem :-) Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): thanks Jim!! Andy Turner to Martin Hawksey (mhawksey), Caroline Greves, Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni: I think some Quicktime update message killed that for me, I was about to reboot my machine to get back to this, but then it all got better again Andy Turner to Martin Hawksey (mhawksey), Caroline Greves, Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni: Thanks Phil, I'll look later :-) Sandie Gay in Birmingham: does this make for disparate conversations and discussions? Andy Turner to Martin Hawksey (mhawksey), Caroline Greves, Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni: I am voting yes Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): the platform brings the conversations together @sandie Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): who uses Google Reader? Andrew Nicols: (used) MaggieJensen: Sorry unable to vote as with previous question ... Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): lol Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Phil - soon gone. Chris Thomson (Netskills): Responses aren't showing in the participant window Sandie Gay in Birmingham: as in aggregating the blogs Hayley: I'm still in denial that Google reader is going... MaggieJensen: Doesn't show me other people's votes either David Jennings: I use google reader and Feedly (elluminate is really playing up for me at the moment) Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): i'm still in denial too, moving to feedly but can see a paid for coming down the track... Sandie Gay in Birmingham: but the are still disparate,no? Andy Turner: @MaggieJenson Maybe you could vote, but it did not update your window view. I think I votes with a tick. James Kerr: @Sandie disparate but connected, aggregated by hosts MaggieJensen: @Andy - thanks James Kerr: participants work in their comfort zones and preferred networks Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): i think this is the challenge for the platform @sandie, to make the conversations flow in a narrative, but it does call for chaotic beginning to mooc, until ppl find their interests Hayley: Ooh, two votes for Feddly. Will take a look, ntohing else has passed muster yet. Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): recommend watching this link about DS106 mediasite.suny.edu/mediasite/Viewer/?peid=a028f4a4a61840eeb88544d7e50faa201d Sandie Gay in Birmingham: what's with the code names? Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Phil - I concur, very inspiring. Andy Turner: On the feedly RSS aggregation thing, has anyone else used Planet Venus (http://intertwingly.net/code/venus/) Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): DS = Digital Storytelling Jim Pettiward: Trouble is, not every MOOC has a Jim Groom type character (but don't necessarily need one I guess - depends on subject maybe...) Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Jim - very true. Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): @jim, maybe we should all aspire to being a Jim Groom type character?? ... i used to think this ad hominem argument, but now i see this as a motivator Andy Turner: @Sandie Can I help with codenames? Jim Pettiward: @phil - probably depends who it's aimed at though doesn't it? Not sure his methods would go down too well on lots of MOOCs... having said that, his enthusiasm must be a real motivator for his 'real' students... Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): @sandie, i think this course reader helps to filter the 'disparate' conversations... Sandie Gay in Birmingham: @Andy - I was just thinking names should be simpler.. Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): http://octel.alt.ac.uk/category/reader/ Andy Turner: @Sandie Which names? Sandie Gay in Birmingham: long list of posts Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): @sandie, this is true, but you can 'star' the ones that are interesting to you... i think the main thing of the cMOOC is to furrow your own path in terms of networking and conversing Sandie Gay in Birmingham: I guess that's so Tom Dore: It's a pity that browsers have stopped, as you said, telling us that a page offers RSS, but you can use a Firefox add-on to get back this functionality, https://addons.mozilla.org/cs/firefox/addon/rss-icon-in-awesombar/ or another for Chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rss-subscription-extensio/nlbjncdgjeocebhnmkbbbdekmmmcbfjd Sandie Gay in Birmingham: I like the newsletter Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): what have ppl's experience with the octel plaform so far - do you like it, did you have any problems, did you overcome any problems... Andy Turner: I'm impressed and seeing how the information appears in multiple places helps understand it a bit. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: I couldn't manage to import the avatar from whereever it was I was meant to Sandie Gay in Birmingham: I registered with the avatar tool but couldn't get it to transfer across Andy Turner: Maybe you want a gravatar @sandie Sandie Gay in Birmingham: That's it - gravatar - couldn't do it Tom Dore: I like the platform, Phil, I think it knits together cleverly. Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): does anyone see any other uses of this twitter visualisation... i like the tags explorer personally... Jim Pettiward: I wonder what the best way to create/manage groups within groups as I'm not a big fan of forums generally... personal preference is for G+ and Twitter... Sandie Gay in Birmingham: Innovation - you either love it or hate it! Andy Turner: It's got me thinking that I want my own instance of a semantic wiki. Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): ... can you explain a little more andy (what is a semantic wiki...) Sandie Gay in Birmingham: :D Andy Turner: For example an instance of http://semantic-mediawiki.org/ populated with data that I've developed possibly with others... Moderator (Phil Tubman - Lancaster Uni): how about LTI the main tools into VLEs @martin michael: Are all these plugins available on worpress.org? David Jennings: Clapping not hands up, Phil! Andy Turner: Thanks Martin :-) Hayley: I think for someone like me it's great to see the work that goes in behind the scenes for something like this. It's all too easy for us to bitch and whine when stuff doesn't work exactly how we'd like. I wouldn't have a clue how to approach this personally. Good work Martin. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: Ditto Elizabeth Charles(Lond): Great to see what is behind the curtain. Thanks. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: didn't recognise mine Sandra: Yes gravatar didn't work for me either Elizabeth Charles(Lond): Didn't work for me either Elizabeth Charles(Lond): #Mozilla is also offering something similiar but it is called persona Andy Turner: So what were the objections? Sandie Gay in Birmingham: is there an alternative way to upload a photo MaggieJensen: Gravatar is interesting, but not terribly intuitive to use. Abram Anders: I wonder if you've given any thought or come across any tools for adding "social reputation" features to wordpress? I realize that cMOOCs may not strictly benefit, but it could be very powerful for SmOOCs and other small course implementations of the wordpress platform. My fantasy is a wordpress comprehensive implementation of something like the StackedOverflow rating system. Sandra: So how big is this installation in terms of size and what sort of server is it on? Elizabeth Charles(Lond): Have used it in the #teachtheweb MOOC Sandie Gay in Birmingham: OLDSMOOC used Cloudworks where groups could have their own clouds but many still used their own familiar tools e.g. Fb, google hangouts etc Andy Turner: Self organising was good, but does it scale to big courses? Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Andy it has worked for approx 1333 users, but any higher and I am not sure whether it wouldn't crash. Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Andy - sorry was referring to using a spreadsheet to self organise. Andy Turner: I agree @Elizabeth, I think for bigger course some suggestion of a start group is perhaps a good idea. This could be done by classifying participants and forming groups that are similar and groups that have a cross-sections of different attributes... Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Andy - yes that sounds much more organised. Thereafter if individuals wanted to move that too should be accommodated. Andy Turner: @Elizabeth Agreed... Andy Turner: I think that would scale to much larger participant levels.... Elizabeth Charles(Lond): @Andy I agree and gives a bit of stability when starting the course. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: A feeling of belonging too Andy Turner: I also think confusion reigning is sometimes a good filter. Sandie Gay in Birmingham: I don't agree MaggieJensen: I like the 'chaos' theory, Martin :) ... but it has definitely made me explore in a different way and I have learnt an awful lot both through the course and through where the 'chaos' took me ... Jim Pettiward: I've recently been looking at ning.com again - I gave it up when they started charging but what they're offering now looks quite interesting... Elizabeth Charles(Lond): Yes it can be but you have to get the balance right! Sandie Gay in Birmingham: @ Andy/ Elisabeth Horrible to be thrown out/have to leave because of confusion Andy Turner: @sandie I'm not advocating intentionally confusing and putting people off, but many things are chaotic, so it can help having some exposure to this... Sandra: I've found this really useful. It's the first webinar for this MOOC I've managed to attend. Thank you Sandie Gay in Birmingham: Thank you, Martin Andy Turner: Thanks everyone :-) Elizabeth Charles(Lond): Thanks Martin and Phil. Jim Pettiward: thanks very much :-) Leo Ureel, @mtu_leo: Interesting talk. Thank you! MaggieJensen: Thank you. This has been really interesting. And thank you for posting the slides :) Uzma: Thanks all :-) Shri Footring: Thanks Martin and alll involved :-) michael: Thank you, Martin. Andy Turner: http://bit.ly/octelweb5 Tom Dore: Thanks, Martin @catherinecronin: Thanks for the links, Martin -- apologies for late arrival... unplanned school run :(
