Noteworthy development: Linden Lab have announced they are developing a next generation of their virtual world product Second Life due to go beta in 2015 and in production from 2016. It will be closed source in the first instance and is therefore distinct from High Fidelity which is being developed under an open source licence by a much smaller team under former LL CEO Philip Rosedale. Presumably Facebook/Oculus will also have a product although the first release of the Oculus Rift is expected to focus on gaming. Of course, there are other platforms and engines available (Unity3D is popular) but these are not centred on a virtual world. All three virtual world products have made a claim for educational use.
