This event coincided with our first webinar (recordings here if you missed it). Whilst the webinar was hosted using external services there was a spike in visits to the site. Usually this level of extra traffic wouldn’t be an issue but due to the way we had configured one of the plugins used in the ocTEL site it overloaded the server bringing it down. Fortunately thanks to the expertise of Positive Internet, who host all of ALT’s websites, the server was quickly brought back online. We’ve also worked with Positive Internet to make the site more resilient to spikes in traffic and if you notice any issues this fix creates please let us know at octel-tech@alt.ac.ukThe upsThe ocTEL website going down yesterday was far from ideal but is a useful illustration of why we are encouraging you to use and explore your personal web spaces. ocTEL, as a course of structured activities and support, finishes on the 20th June, but hopefully as a result of ocTEL you would have been able to make new connections, established yourself in new spaces, to continue exploring technology enhanced learning. The ocTEL site will still be here after June (just as ocTEL 2013 is) but the collection of blog posts and other site features will be gradually switched to read only. The exploration and use of personal spaces was something we touched upon in the this week’s webinar. Since then #ocTEL ers have mobilised setting up new spaces in LinkedIn, Scoopit, and others we are collecting in this page. Whether or not the ocTEL site going down spurred the exploration into these new spaces is impossible to say and we are certainly not planning any further blackouts. So if you’ve visited one of these spaces, if you have found a participants blog that you find useful, if you’ve commented on a blog or forum post, even if you do nothing else as part of ocTEL you’ve already ‘passed’, you’ve made a connection!Share this:TwitterGoogleLinkedInFacebookEmail Activity Stream (Visit on site) danielharding earned a week 0 badge: Check-in Badge 1 minute ago
There is debate about awarding credit for attendance but given the style of this course we feel it’s important to find mechanisms for you to see who also is active within each week. Click on this badge link to ‘check-in’ and see who else is also active in this topic.

@vbaxter @barbarapg Our programme uses Moodle heavily, but mainly to deliver content. We have found some of the functions, as you say, heavy and time consuming to create: we don’t have an ed-tech support group to do this for us, so it us up to the teachers. I’m noticing that Goole Docs and Google Drive seem to be more useful for students and…[Read more]

Hi! I’m a Spanish teacher at Bond University in the Gold Coast, Australia. I have been using different types of technology in my classes with different levels of success. At the beginning most of it was trial and error. I’m so happy now to have places like this where we can share ideas and resources!
